For the past 20 years, our friend and colleague, John Morrell, has led the venerable law firm, Higgs Fletcher & Mack, as its Managing Partner and Chairman. Under his leadership, San Diego’s oldest law firm, HFM, has grown to become one of the city’s largest, with a client list that is considered the gold standard in San Diego.
This month, John retired from law practice, and moved a half-mile from his former law office to the Douglas Wilson Companies Building which overlooks downtown’s Fifth Avenue. John will bolster Douglas Wilson Companies’ already deep expertise in fiduciary services and support DWC’s growth of business and fiduciary service areas.
“We are thrilled and honored to welcome John as President of the Douglas Wilson Companies,” said founder and namesake, Doug Wilson. “His leadership skills and expertise in complex disputes, workouts, insolvency and fiduciary issues will help expand our company’s national platform.”
“As we all know, even in good times, there is a need for court-appointed neutrals to sort out asset disputes and forensic accounting issues. Whether cycles are up or down, these complexities are constant. This is DWC’s wheelhouse.”
Within a practice which was balanced between creditor and debtor representation in insolvency matters, John’s experience includes other issues directly related to business operations. As a partner with HFM since 1991, he was the lead attorney in some of the firm’s largest cases.
Looking ahead, John sees a major transition of wealth over the next 30 years, and the issues that will accompany such a huge shift in assets. “In the next few decades we will see an increased need for fiduciary relationships and creative solutions. I’m excited about the opportunity to contribute to the success of DWC’s clients.”
